The Dance of the Fool [19 Jul 2009|11:50pm]

handmadebooks

[copticbandit]
Title: The Dance of the Fool book. A simple but rough book: the cover is of rough paper, the endpapers are double and rough, the actual signatures are not rough but even the mull is rough. There are four signatures of five papers each for a total of 80 pages.

The endpapers have poems by Adelaide Crapsey handwritten on them.

More at Tedorigawa Bookmakers.

Thanks for spending the time with The Dance of the Fool . I must go dance now.

I've never posted here before, although I've been making books for awhile.  I should remedy that, I'm sure, but the reason I was posting is Ester K. Smith's brilliant How to Make Books, which I wrote a book review of  over on Handmade News.

I've never really had a consistent "dream" in life, or any goals/plans beyond getting to and finishing college. i knew what i wanted to study, and i knew where i didn't want to end up. now, as i'm creeping up on my 21st birthday and my final year of undergraduate studies, i figure it's probably time to think some shit over.

i still can't answer that age old "when i grow up" question, but so far this is what i've got:

-i want to go to law school so that i have the tools and cred to defend people's rights. i believe in every person's right to exist on a level playing field, and that will never waiver.
-i want a family that won't disintegrate. i want to get married. i want to have a child. i want that child to have a chance.
-i want to own a house with a pool. then, when the air conditioner breaks the fuck down in the height of summer heat, i can escape.
-i want to write a book. just one. don't care what on. i want to say i wrote a book.
-i do not want to be an addict. to be abused. to be stuck in any situation without a reasonable amount of control. to ever feel like i missed an opportunity.

i may not have the most direction, but if i can get through life and feel like i did something important, then i will be content. yeah, i have the desire to be extraodinary, to be the next gloria steinem or what-fucking-ever, but it won't be the end of the world if i'm behind the scenes and kickin' ass.
OR i can just stay in college forever and live in the flats and have a meal plan. that'd be great, too.

Coptic binding with a soft cover [17 Jul 2009|12:32pm]

[forxthexmad]
Hi there!

I've been watching this community for a long time and I adore all the beautiful projects shared. I've been studying book-binding for a while, but since it wasn't a part of my major, I could hardly do it in my free time. Now that I've graduated, I'm doing more projects. Recently I've been asked to bind a log for an artist that follows the progress of a public art installation. He loves the straight-up coptic stitch. The only problem is, I'm from a place that has no book-board, and maybe no other alternative (though I'm looking). Even if we find some, it would cost more than using cardstock for a cover. I've only ever done a coptic stitch with a hardcover. Has anyone here ever sewn a coptic stitch with a softcover, and can they direct me to a place that has good advice on that? Any advice would be appreciated! If I get to do the job I'll post pictures of the final project!!

Oh French 80s music!

My dad ended up driving here from Philadelphia last weekend. We took a day trip to Provincetown on Saturday and on the way there, we ended up listening to his compilation CDs that he bought in Germany. There was a 60s, 70s and 80s one -- songs popular at the time but also songs that I'd never heard before because it was a European compilation. On it was this gem! The video makes this song even more awesome.

I finally figured out that the dull ache in my shins is from my elasticy socks pulling at my leg hair.  Men must have the same problem right?

from the at-large magazine editors:

"Our next issue is themed Biology -- so interpret that how you will. And send us your finest in prose, poetry, art, translation, and any other medium you can dream up. And of course, tell everyone you can think of."

submission guidelines:

At-Large Magazine aims to gather prose, poetry, music, art, and other media and create a pop dialogue out of work that aims to take risks. If you're still uncertain about what we accept, check out our past issues.

FICTION/NONFICTION. All prose must be in Microsoft Word format, no more than 2,000 words. Column proposals are also welcomed. Fiction submissions should be addressed to Rohin Guha. Nonfiction submissions should be addressed to Eve Bates.

POETRY. All poetry must be in a single Microsoft Word document. 4 poems per submission. All poetry submissions should be addressed to Garrett Burrell.

MUSIC/ART/VISUAL MEDIA. Send artist statement and samples. All media (digital, video, mixed, etc.) is encouraged. All submissions should be addressed to Rohin Guha or Niina Pollari.

Include a brief cover letter with anything you feel we should know. Send submissions as attachments. Do not paste your work into the body of your e-mail. If you don't follow these guidelines, no sweat. Publication isn't right for everyone.

Right now, we get no money. So if you get published, you get no money. However, you will be published among other luminaries and get a rather sparkly publication credit on your CV.

Submissions should be sent to atlarge (dot) editors (at) gmail (dot) com. Subject lines should have the format TITLE / AUTHOR / GENRE. Replace capitalized words with their corresponding keyboard counterparts. Send all inquiries to that address as well. Don't send in more than one submission at a time. We're busy people with lives, too.

Lovingly yours,
At-Large Editors
