I saw Taking Root, a documentary about Wangari Maathi this afternoon. She is such a courageous and inspirational woman. She was the first African woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize and the first woman to attain a Ph.d is East Africa. She has worked for decades as an environmental, human rights activist, women's rights activist, and a grassroots political organizer. She founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977, which has been responsible for the planting of over forty million trees. The documentary was made by two Vermont film makers and was started in 2002. Check out the movie near you:

viginity pledges. [29 Dec 2008|11:30am]
"It's disturbing because [abstinence based education] is something the government has been spending $200 million on a year, which typically includes virginity pledges. What we now know, or at least has been proven in a large scale study that matched teens together so they were similar on a hundred different characteristics except for the fact that they took this virginity pledge versus not taking the virginity pledge. What they're finding is that the pledges don't delay the age of onset of first sexual encounter, they don't change the number of sexual partners a person is going to have in their lifetime. What seems to change is the likelihood that they're going to protect themselves from pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The ones who took the virginity pledge were less likely to protect themselves, most likely because they weren't being armed with the information they needed."

"So when did virginity go from something that could blunt knives to something precious that young women must "save" for marriage? Researchers credit the shift from a hunting and gathering to an agricultural-based patriarchal society. Once men owned property that they could pass on to sons, it became very important to make sure you knew your wife's kids were your own. By ensuring she was a virgin when you married her, you could be more certain that her kids were yours. And if you look around the world even today, the more patriarchal a society, the more value that is usually placed on virginity.

Religion, as usual, is also largely to blame. By the time the most famous Virgin came around – the Virgin Mary, very popular at this time of year -- there was so much negative press around sexuality that really, how could the mother of Jesus be anything but virginal."

Why Is Everyone So Obsessed with Women's Virginity?

Today we lost the ram. The sweet creature who fell ill two weeks ago. It was so sad to watch him deteriorate. To cough, sputter, and sneeze from pneumonia. He had no appetite but would love to be fed sliced apples by hand. He is suffering no more.

"The British papers are abuzz this morning with a sickening story of sexual assault, alcohol and insensitivity. Helen, a 25-year-old beauty therapist in London, saw the £11,000 awarded to her in the aftermath of her rape by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) reduced by 25% because she had been drinking the night of the attack, which occurred four years ago. According to the Telegraph, "The policy came about because of a clause in CICA guidelines that awards for all types of injury can be cut if alcohol consumption 'contributed to the circumstances that gave rise to the injury.'" When her payout was reduced, Helen received a letter from CICA that said, "The evidence we have is that your excessive consumption of alcohol was a contributing factor in the incident."
